Most U.S. homes are heated with either furnaces or boilers. Furnaces heat air and distribute the heated air through the house using ducts. Boilers heat water, providing either hot water or steam for heating. Steam is distributed via pipes to steam radiators, and hot water can be distributed via baseboard radiators or radiant floor systems, or can heat air via a coil. Steam boilers operate at a higher temperature than hot water boilers, and are inherently less efficient, but high-efficiency versions of all types of furnaces and boilers are currently available. Warm Air Systems

These Warm Air Systems work with central duct work. They include furnaces, heat pumps and can be fueled by oil, electric, gas or propane.

• Furnaces
  Furnaces provide warmth to your home as part of a residential HVAC split system and work with both air conditioning units and heat pumps.
   
  
• Heat Pumps
  Heat pumps can be used to provide either heating or cooling, depending upon whether the environment is cooler or warmer than the conditioned-space. A reversible-cycle heat pump simply operates in a way that changes which coil is the condenser, and which the evaporator.
   
  Heat pumps always move thermal energy in the opposite direction from the environmental temperature, so they can be used instead of air conditioning systems to cool your home in the hotter months and warm your home in the cooler months.
   
  Reversible-cycle heat pumps provide heating, in cooler months. They are able to utilize some thermal energy from the environment by pulling heat from the outside air or ground, and in doing so they can increase energy efficiency.
   
  
• Oil to Gas Conversions
  Converting your furnace from oil burning to gas burning can be a smart investment in your home. Natural gas is not only a more affordable fuel source for residential heating, it is also the cleanest of the fossil fuels.   THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
  The Package Dual Fuel Unit is a package heat pump with a gas furnace installed in the heat section instead of electric heat that a standard package heat pump features. This hybrid package system allows for both comfort and energy savings by utilizing the electric heat pump for warmth, except in colder periods, which is when the gas furnace would take over to assure maximum comfort and energy savings.

Boiler Systems

Providing consistent heat to a room, Boiler Systems tend to be quieter than other heating systems and are usually powered by gas or oil.

• Hot Water Boilers: (through baseboards) Hot water boilers heat water to a slightly lower temperature, but the water is still very hot. These boilers require circulators and expansion tanks. • Steam Boilers (radiators) Steam boilers heat water to the boiling point to create steam, which travels through the system’s lines. These types of boilers require pressure release valves, steam limit controls and steam valves. No pumps are required for steam boilers since the steam can expand through the system by itself.
